In one of our early trips, I discovered the old wooden Anglican church in Lunenburg. It was one of the oldest in North America and "a 247-year-old landmark tucked in the centre of their South Shore fishing village". In 2001 it was "destroyed by fire, apparently after Halloween mischief". It had been designated a heritage site and since less than 50% was destroyed (it is hard to imagine this is true) funds were committed to restore this jewel. I returned in 2002 and viewed the early progress and then again in 2006 to see the restored building. The reconstruction was painstaking and thorough. |
